Facilities

The Burns research group has several primary labs where hard work, engineering, and science come together in often fantastic results. Along with much of the department, we have relocated our primary labs and graduate student offices to the North Campus Research Complex (NCRC), in Building 28. We have access to the Chemical Engineering Cleanroom in Dow for glass, SU-8, and PDMS processing. We additionally have general lab space and the dicing saw room for post-processing of devices and performing other light-manufacturing capabilities. We also make use of the College of Engineering's Lurie Nanofabrication Facility (LNF).

NCRC Laboratory

(B28-G097E, G001E, 1105)

The Burns Group lab is shared with the Lin group and has ample space for equipment and the group's work. Available equipment includes: two stereoscope setups (with added fluorescent lamps), video capture devices including high-speed camera, a bright-field/dark-field objective microscope with complementary data aquisition equipment, and a fluorescent microscope for biological experiments. We have several FDM and SLA printers, as well as two custom dual-wavelength SLA printers, which are located in rm 1105. We also have a variety of tooling and machining equipment in rm G001E, including a Tomarmach PCNC 440 mill.

NCRC Offices

Graduate student offices are located adjacent to the B28-G097E labspace in NCRC. Each office is shared by two graduate students and connects directly to the lab space. We share a common area containing a couch, refrigerator, and microwave with the Lin group.

ChE Cleanroom

The Chemical Engineering cleanroom is a class 1000 cleanroom located on the 3rd floor of the H.H. Dow building. The cleanroom includes capabilities to process SU-8, glass, and PDMS.

Specific equipment includes:

  • E-Beam Evaporator (Au/Cr/SiO2/Ti)
  • Mask Aligner
  • Photoresist and SU-8 Spinners
  • Gold and Aluminum Wire Bonders
  • Parylene Coater
  • Surface Profilometer
  • Acid, Base, Solvent, and Photoresist Fume Hoods
  • Oxygen/Argon Plasma RIE
  • Heated Hydraulic Press

Dow Laboratory

(3005/3013)

Formerly the group's main laboratory, most device fabrication occurs here and in the cleanroom. We also have additional space in Dow with a laminater, soldering irons, drills, circular saws and other various pieces of equipment. Testing and other lab work is now performed in the NCRC labs.
